SGL, a leading provider of content archive and storage management software for media and entertainment, has announced that Hungarian national broadcaster MTVA has installed SGL’s flagship FlashNet archive system. Fully integrated with Avid’s Interplay PAM the SGL archive, which was installed by systems integrator Snitt Studio, will provide MTVA’s sports production team with sophisticated archive functionality including partial file restore.

Supported by the Avid Interplay PAM workflow, partial file restore was a key requirement for MTVA. The broadcaster often only requires short clips for highlights or replays of matches and events. Built-in intelligence within FlashNet’s data handling components read and log metadata held in the MXF or QuickTime wrapper as it’s written to the archive. This information is then passed to the FlashNet database for later use when only a small portion of the original material is required.

“SGL FlashNet’s tight integration with Avid Interplay provides a seamless production environment for sports broadcasters like MTVA,” explains Zoltán Sinkovics, Head of Information Technology, MTVA. This strong pedigree coupled with sophisticated partial file restore technology means that editors can create creative sequences quickly and efficiently.”

“One of the most challenging elements of a media-centric file-based workflow is file size,” adds Lee Sheppard, SGL’s Director of Product Management. “Media companies and technology solutions providers are in a never-ending race between file size and the available technology to store these files. Partial file restore allows editors to restore just the clips that they need in high resolution, saving bandwidth and space on expensive production storage.”

SGL FlashNet is an integral part of Avid’s Integrated Media Enterprise, providing the archive component of the Avid open system architecture that encompasses Avid Interplay and the entire suite of Avid systems and solutions. As well as providing MTVA with a scalable storage management system, SGL FlashNet reduces the amount of online storage required, thereby significantly reducing costs.
